| First Look: Benchmarks: Intel Mac mini scores a mixed bag
Last Tuesday, Apple unveiled the newest member of its product line to receive an Intel brain transplant: the Mac mini. With a choice between a 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo or 1.5GHz Core Solo processor, these new minis replace the current models built with either a 1.42GHz or 1.25GHz PowerPC G4 processor. Macworld Lab has put these two models to the test, and the results—including an updated version of our Speedmark benchmarking suite—are something of a mixed bag. Like all of the new Intel-based Macs, these Mac minis perform admirably when running applications that have been updated to run on both Intel and PowerPC processors. Cinema 4D results, for example, show the Core Duo Mac mini rendering the test scene in one-third of the time it took the previous high-end mini.
Betting Exchanges - Disruptive innovation at work
Betfair is the dominant betting exchange and the bigger the company gets, the harder it is for competitors to keep pace: the network effect. The Betfair exchange boasts a high degree of liquidity, across a wide range of sports betting markets, alongside a professional customer service operation and a fully integrated telephone and internet betting service. At the end of November 2006 Betfair announced that it had acquired Portway Press Limited, the owner of Timeform, the world-renowned brand publishing horseracing ratings, form guides and analysis. In February 2007 it launched Betfair Radio. The robustness of Betfair's business model is demonstrated by the fact that the company has continued to increase revenue growth month by month, despite facing fierce competition from other betting exchanges, many offering zero commission rates (Mansion betting exchange which opened in September 2004, offering zero commission, shut its doors in October 2007).

MontaVista beefs up carrier-grade Linux
The new release is based on the Linux 2.6.21 kernel, but includes a number of patches and features from the 2.6.22 release. Also included are the Glibc 2.5.90 Linux libraries and the GC 4.2.0 compilers. Many of the changes are aimed at making the operating system still more reliable and resilient, and at simplifying an array of application development tasks. The previous release, Version 4.0, achieved what the vendor says is 99.999% uptime, a key milestone for carrier-quality operating systems. That percentage translates into less than 31.5 seconds of downtime yearly, according to Dan Cauchy, director of marketing for MontaVista's carrier and mobile group. The company offers an array of Linux platforms, including one aimed at smartphones and another at real-time embedded systems. A battery of real-time enhancements that had been in the past applied as a separate patch are now integrated with the kernel, making it possible for other parts of the software system to make use of them.

Multi-Level Marketing, a Hidden Peril in China
HONG KONGMulti-level marketing (MLM) 1 , also know as pyramid schemes ( chuanxiao ), has become prevalent again in China in the past two years 2 . Millions of people, including students and farmers, are involved in this sector, drawing 50 billion yuan (US$6.66 billion) into the scheme. Chinese authorities continue, however, to be wary of direct sales on a number of grounds, among them pyramid scheme frauds, strong networking capabilities and loss of social stability. With such a large and well-organized sales force, MLM has caused panic on the authorities. In July and August of this year, the authorities significantly strengthened the co-operation with related departments in fighting illegal pyramid selling. According to Oriental Daily News in Hong Kong, MLM salespeople, dissatisfied with the authority's bans, often gather a crowd to attack governmental agencies.
Notes: Fish loses his composure, then his match
A misdirected ball sailed near an official in the third game of the third set. "I was just a little frustrated because we were having a fine match," Fish said after the 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 6-1 loss. "Jarkko and I are good friends and were obviously trying to beat the ... out of each other, and the umpire jumps in and says I tried to hit the linesman with a ball, which is just not the case." Fish's reaction on the court was not so measured. The video feed of the match picked up a clearly upset Fish berating chair umpire Damian Steiner of Argentina, accusing him of ruining a "great match." Fish went on to serve out the game, but won just two more games the rest of the match. He appeared frustrated and angry for throughout the last set, muttering to himself and scowling at the umpire and his opponent.
