Now it's edible oils in chhota sachets

The shampoo market did it long ago and did well with it. Rural consumers, attracted by the low unit prices, and travelling urban consumers who looked at the convenience of the packaging, lapped up the format. Some FMCG companies also extended the small sachet idea to toothpastes and did well with it as well. Same reasons.

Call it the famous bottom of the pyramid theory of management guru CK Prahlad or call it economic sense, more product lines appear to be buying into the small pack idea. Branded edible oils look like the most recent additions to buy into the small sachets idea. Recently, Bunge India, which acquired the Dalda brand from the Hindustan Lever (today Hindustan Unilever) in 2003, decided to offer it in mini packs, priced at Rs 5 and Rs 10. These minis pack Dalda in a blend of soya beans and palm oil.

Must-keep resolutions for online marketers

I won't be so darn sensitive and controlling when people say bad things about me. After all, negative feedback is better than none; it means someone wants to help.

The web is a great place to practice because hundreds of consumers will willingly tell you what's wrong with your product, what's off-base in your communication, and how to improve.

Take Gamespot critic Jeff Gertsmann, who was fired because of his negative review of Kane & Lynch, an advertiser. The gaming community got wind, ranted about Gamespot's lack of integrity, made it a top story on Digg and viewed it 300,000 times on YouTube. So this year I will not silence my critics, but will listen to their constructive feedback, and admit my mistakes graciously.

Stretch beyond paid search
It's easy to be lazy and keep doing what has worked before, and there's no doubt that search works, especially for big brands with the money to get their message center stage on Google.

Pakistan seek Oval result change

England were awarded the match after Pakistan refused to play in protest over umpire Darrell Hair's decision to penalise them for ball-tampering.

Pakistan were subsequently cleared of ball-tampering by an ICC tribunal.

And the country's cricket board wants the result changed to "match abandoned" or "match drawn".

Though the PCB is not saying anything through an official spokesman, an unnamed PCB official explained its case to various sources on Friday.

He said: "We have made the application to the ICC and hope for a favourable result at the next cricket committee meeting in May.

GameGirlz Turns Industry On to Female Gamers

Girl gamers are a small but vocal bunch, and this year has seen all-girl Quake clans sprout across the Web, women tackle each other in all-female tournaments, and names like Kornelia appear among the top-ranked professional gamers. Speaking for this growing community, the webzine GameGirlz launched Monday as a resource and inspiration for girls looking to play and build multiplayer games. Its creator also hopes to give the gaming industry some much-needed insights into what girls want to see in their shooters.

"If there were more women professionals involved in the industry, it would encourage more girls to play games," says Vangie Beal, aka "Aurora," director of GameGirlz. "Get women involved in marketing: Game marketing is so unfriendly to females that girls don't even want to try playing."

Beal, 22, has a deep involvement in gaming - having headed up the first all-girl Quake clan, PMS.

Apple Experts: Macbook Air 'Like A Second Car'

The recently unveiled Macbook Air lacks durability and certain features that business users look for, but industry experts predict it'll sell like hotcakes within the market segment for which it appears to be intended.

Simply put, the MacBook Air will attract a completely different type of customer than the typical business user, says George Swords, marketing manager at PowerMacPac, an Apple solution provider in Portland, Ore.

"The MacBook Air isn't meant to replace a full-featured Macbook Pro, and the first adopters will probably be people that already have a MacBook Pro or tower," said Swords. "It could also appeal to some business users as a device that's bigger than a PDA, but isn't a Tablet PC."

Michael Oh, CEO of Tech Superpowers, a Boston-based Apple specialist, says the lack of built-in Ethernet and Firewire ports shows that Apple isn't positioning it as a PC notebook killer.

Tips to Reduce Post-Holiday Debt from Citizens Financial Group

Include dates that payments are due, minimum payments and credit card interest rates. Once the necessities have been paid, prioritize which bills you will pay off next. Eliminate balances on high interest credit cards and pay more than the minimum on the rest if possible. Open a savings account with the money remaining from your budget each month. Investigate alternative borrowing options - An important thing to consider is whether to consolidate all your debt into one monthly payment. If needed, opening a home equity loan or line of credit can lower your interest rate, which will reduce monthly payments and give you fewer bills to pay each month. Consolidation can also make budgeting much easier. Look to the future - The new year offers an opportunity to act as a clean slate from previous spending mistakes.
