A heaping helping of seconds and leftovers

This is your final "clip and carry" holiday shopping column. Preview the sales by checking Web sites for a glimpse of what each company is all about - usually, specifics about location and directions are provided. A few caveats: Note sale dates carefully. Some sales are for one day, others over one weekend, a week or longer. All sales are final; early birds typically see the best selection but have to endure greater crowds and longer checkout lines; unless otherwise noted, credit cards and checks are accepted.

Giant Holiday Warehouse Sale

I love this sale in Benicia; it's tchotchke heaven! I always leave with a box of gifties - those "minor" gifts that fill out your holiday shopping lists. The warehouse is filled with boxes of excess and discontinued inventory from fundraising companies (mostly school catalogs).

July 2006

I know in my head I should be packing the car, making last minute arrangements and checking to be sure I haven’t forgotten anything.

I am especially antsy to get going this year since last summer I spent here at home after breaking my leg in 3 places. But at least this year, I am healthy, and ready to go. So until September I need to keep the bags by the door and just chill, until its my time to leave for the Cape.

Have a great August all, I will miss you, but I will be coming soon.

Dispute over pit in Jackson County park still not settled

In June 2005, county legislators authorized a lawsuit against McClain and the excavator. A year later, the County Legislature voted to accept McClain's settlement offer.

But the settlement anticipated that the claim against the excavator would continue and required McClain's help, stating "as part of the settlement McClain Enterprises will cooperate in providing evidence as requested by Jackson County."

Haden stressed that although the settlement was not finalized, McClain has been cooperative. Haden said the delay was initiated solely by the county.

McClain said that as a result, the transfer of the five acres to the county never occurred. McClain said he did not know why the county had not completed the deal. "We're waiting on the county," he said.

Little kitchen engineering yields substitute for LPG

The gas produced runs for nearly one-and-a-half hour sufficient for cooking food for a day.

Giving details about the plant, Khanna said the plant has been set up at the roof top and no foul smell was being produced that could irritate people. I used two syntax tanks of 1,000 litre and 800 litre for the plant and the total cost was around Rs 10,000. In fact, gobar gas plants in villages should be converted into methane gas producing plants as they help to reduce household expenditures, says this proud electrical engineer.

Khanna said the Punjab government should take up the project of setting up such plants in urban and rural areas keeping in view the effects of green house gases polluting the environment. He said by setting up mega projects for producing methane gas out of the solid waste would reduce the impact of the gas on the environment, besides carbon credits can also be put to good use.

Mouton touts accountability; boots Giles

The foundation of Kevin Mouton's pyramid of success is accountability. So one of his first acts as Oregon State's interim men's basketball coach on Monday was to kick talented but undependable junior center C.J. Giles off the team."He was dismissed, and that's just pretty much how we want to keep it," Mouton said at his first media session since being elevated to head coach on Sunday night after former coach Jay John was fired. "He's just going to move on and pursue his other options, be it the NBA, or a Division II transfer."We just want to wish him the best and go from there. We felt it was time for us to make a move and go from there."Mouton gave no specific reason for booting Giles, a 6-foot-11 transfer from Kansas who also wore out his welcome in Lawrence in 21/2 troubled seasons before transferring to OSU in January 2007.
