 Recruiting Marketing Pyramid Success

X marks this iffy new gizmo

High-energy salespeople are hawking a device called Xpower at pumped-up meetings in Stockton banquet rooms, claiming it slashes home power bills.

"Area directors" for Forum Technologies also are recruiting people into Forum's sales force, a multilevel marketing organization, or MLM, that the company's CEO says is not a pyramid scheme.

The MLM half of the sales pitch, in other words, is not about buying an energy-saving gizmo but getting rich through multilevel marketing of Xpower and other Forum products.

Concerned readers contacted me, saying scores of people eager for easy money are being recruited. I could not personally attend meetings, being held every few days at area restaurants, fearing that I'd be recognized. Instead, a trusted associate attended.

My associate attended Sunday night's meeting at the West March Lane Carrows Family Restaurant.

Outdoors: Fishing for a rebate

Our grouse season was over and the geese could wait for another day. Besides, Willow likes to curl up on the hearth rug and soak up the heat from the bricks and I should make an effort to begin refilling my fly boxes, since last summer I gave most of my larger dry flies to our niece's husband, Dave, when we visited them in Montana. Then Phil phoned when we walked in the door at the farmhouse. We swap babysitting chores and it's his turn to baby sit Willow while we work the Fly Show in Somerset, N.J.In a week or so I'll return the favor and baby sit his English setter, Flame, while he goes to West Virginia for one last grouse hunt before fishing season. It's a great trade and saves putting the dogs in a commercial kennel, where they might get kennel cough or some other problem.

Chandler man admits his guilt in church-fraud case

One of the owners of a Christian non-profit company accused of defrauding churchgoers in Arizona and 12 other states has admitted funneling millions in investors' money into offshore accounts as part of a pyramid scheme. The Arizona Attorney General's Office announced Tuesday that Gregg Wolfe of Chandler has agreed to turn state's evidence against his partner, Edward Purvis, as part of a plea deal in a case that involved bribing a Chandler police officer and filing bogus legal claims against public officials. Purvis has denied any wrongdoing in the case. .

Fear rides the MAX

But now Jacobson says MAX has become a transportation system for criminals.

"Except during the peak rush hours, MAX is little more than a way for the criminal element to move from one crime scene to another," Jacobson said.

Jacobson said he began losing faith in MAX long before last Saturday's baseball bat attack by a 15-year-old suspected gang member on an elderly man at the Gresham Central MAX station. The beating left Laurie Lee Chilcote, 71, hospitalized with extensive head injuries at Oregon Health & Science University.

His accused attacker, Abel Antonio Chavez-Garcia, was arrested by Gresham police on charges of first-degree assault, attempted murder and first-degree criminal mischief. The case is scheduled to be considered by a Multnomah County grand jury today.
