| Health tests find dirty pools in hotels, condos
But even as the stress slips away, there is a nagging question in the back of your mind: is this water safe? Turns out the answer too often is no, and that the same hotel that may caringly vacuum the carpets and ensures clean towels are on the rack might be failing to meet health standards poolside. .
Reviving the J-School
For as long as doomsayers have predicted the decline of civic-minded reportage as we know it, reformers have sought to draft a rewrite of the institutions that train many undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a career in journalism. Criticisms of journalism schools have ranged from questioning whether the institutions are necessary in the first place (since many journalists, and most senior ones, don’t have journalism degrees) to debating the merits of teaching practical skills versus theory and whether curriculums should emphasize broad knowledge or specialization in individual fields. All of those issues, and others, came to light on Wednesday at a meeting of journalism school deans, editors and news executives struggling with the perennial questions of what aspiring journalists should learn, how they should be taught and how schools should adapt to the fast-evolving and ever-fragmenting media landscape.
The Hillary effect: great story, but is it true?
Former Michigan lottery commissioner Gary Peters is already in the thick of a battle against Republican congressman Joe Knollenberg, cutting the incumbent's polling lead by 5% since the spring in his district, which includes some upscale areas of suburban Detroit. Acknowledging the US electorate's long history with Ms Clinton, Mr Peters defied political pundits by deeming her a possible upside to his race. "The nice thing about Hillary Clinton is, everything that's bad is already known," Mr Peters said. "It's full disclosure with her - there aren't any surprises." Democrats who privately fear a "Clinton effect" on the ticket point to her opinion polls, in which voters appear to like and hate her in equal numbers, both fewer than 50%. Ms Clinton is the most known of any presidential candidate, her rivals note, and simultaneously the most disfavoured.
Beach police shoot and wound man armed with knife
As someone who works in an area hospital I'm amazed how many shootings or stabbings we don't hear about. Its almost as surprising as how desensitized this area is to its high rate of violent crime. I feel far less safe here than in most other cities I've lived. The public seems completely willing to accept a car jacker with a gun as long as he targets someone else, but if its a police officer meeting that violent crime with equal force its a violation of their civil rights. .
Rules for Getting Your Comment Posted
We've come up with a few simple rules for comments. Violate them and you will suffer (the shame of having your comments blocked, probably). Keep it polite. Of course folks will disagree, but try to focus on the issues and not your opponent's corny screen name, or their love for The Dave Matthews Band. For example: "Luke is so so wrong about The Seahawks winning the Superbowl" is fine. "Luke is an idiot and has no value as a human being because he thinks the Seahawks will win the Superbowl" is less fine. Also, don't threaten people or post racist / sexist / mean stuff. No obscenities. You can curse at your computer screen, just not on it, when you're posting comments to our site. Don't rip stuff off and post it as your own fascinating work. Seriously, can you think of anything sadder? Quoting is fine as long as you give credit.
Olmert faces new test with Lebanon war report
Israel's army chief and defence minister already paid with their jobs last year for what many saw as a debacle against Hezbollah in Lebanon after the guerrillas seized two Israeli soldiers and killed eight in border clashes. The Commission cannot deliver recommendations that Olmert or others should resign, although the prime minister can expect harsh words from the five panel members at a news conference. Unlike April's interim report, the final findings will focus on the last days of the month-long conflict, when Olmert ordered a costly ground assault even as a U.N. truce was in the works to end a war that killed 900 Lebanese civilians and 300 fighters. Opposition politicians and relatives of some of the 159 Israelis killed in the war, most of them soldiers, are planning protests later in the week, which Olmert's rivals hope may push him toward the exit.
Winery mulled at Belle Meade
Belle Meade Plantation is seeking regulatory approval to place a winery on the 30-acre historical site and begin marketing a line of Belle Meade brand wines. Representatives of the 200-year-old farm, which had more than 150,000 visitors last year, would like to draw from the plantation's history of spirit-making and create an interactive educational experience where visitors participate in the wine-making process. The plantation has received zoning approval from the city of Belle Meade and officials are working with the Department of Agriculture and the Alcohol and Beverage Commission to get approval to make and sell wine onsite. However, it could take a year or longer before the nonprofit foundation knows if its winery will become a reality.
GE's Ecomagination is good for GE and good for us, too
The images are as irresistible as the message. A grasshopper balanced atop a house made entirely of leaves is joined by the word "Ecomagination." Accompanying a bird nest perched in the branches of a tree, one advertisement intones: "Nature can teach us many things. We took a course in home building." Sheesh, talk about enviro-seduction. Where do I sign up? General Electric, that behemoth producer of everything from lightbulbs, appliances and coal-powered turbines to trains, power plants and financial services may be best known in environmental circles as the corporate Goliath that poisoned the Hudson river with PCBs (the multi-year clean-up project began this summer after 30 years of legal wrangling). But for the past two-and-a-half years, the company's Ecomagination initiative has attempted to slough off its toxic image and emerge with a green facelift.
